Informing antenna design for sky-averaged 21-cm experiments using a simulated Bayesian data analysis pipeline

ABSTRACT Global 21-cm experiments aim to measure the sky-averaged H i absorption signal from cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization. However, antenna chromaticity coupling bright foregrounds can introduce distortions into observational data such experiments. We demonstrate a method for guiding design global experiment through analysis simulations. This is done by performing simulated observations range inserted signals then attempting identify with pipeline. this on five antennas that were considered as potential designs Radio Experiment Analysis Cosmic Hydrogen: conical log spiral antenna, an inverted sinuous polygonal-, rectangular-, elliptical-bladed dipoles. find performs significantly better than other tested, able correctly confidently every signal. In second place polygonal dipole which was only unable detect both very low amplitudes 0.05 K centre frequency 80 MHz. The found perform least accurately, highest amplitude signals, even biases. also that, due non-trivial nature chromatic distortion processes correcting it, these are not results could have been expected superficially extent variation in each antenna.
